I Got Married In A Thrifted Dress

After letting these three gorgeous dresses get away with only about a week to my civil wedding and everyone constantly asking me ‘have you found a dress?’, the pressure definitely got wesser. I woke up one morning and decided to take matters into my hands after spending the previous night drawing up what I thought was the perfect plan.

My Perfect Plan – Go to the market, thrift a dress I absolutely love whether it’s my size or not, get some ivory fabric and have a tailor remake the thrifted dress in this new fabric. Excellent right?!

Well, I got to the market, yaba market to be precise and as usual, I found gems. Infact, I found a dress that looked very similar to this AbisolaOlusola dress and my joy knew no bounds, I immediately paid the vendor and headed to buy some satin ivory fabric. On way out to the fabric section of the market, I spotted a shop retailing secondhand party dresses. Reluctantly, I decided to have a quick look at what they had in stock just in case I find another dress option to take to the tailor. I subconsciously asked to be shown the white dresses they had available and upon sighting the first dress I was shown, I sent this message to my husband {image below}

I couldn’t believe my eyes, I have finally found a wedding dress and it was love at first sight!!! It was the perfect ivory shade, with all my favorite details like the huge bow behind and the lace trimming, what a lucky find. The only problem was that, it didn’t fit. Thankfully, there was some extra layer of fabric below that was used to make the dress longer and that’s what the tailor aka obioma and I worked with to expand the bodice and construct new sleeves as the puffy sleeves the dress came with wasn’t working for me.

From my husband to my sister, my mom and everyone else that I showed the dress to, they also really liked it and were of the opinions that it’s totally my style. In all honesty, I think I delayed with finding a dress because I wanted an excuse to wear a second hand dress especially as this might be the only part of all my wedding ceremony that I’d have the chance to wear something second hand.

June 14th 2023 finally came, I styled my braids, did my makeup, wore my dress and I truly felt like the most beautiful girl in the world. Here are some of the photos my long time photographer and friend Seun took of me and us…

Phewwwww, this was such a long read but I hope you enjoyed reading it. I’d absolutely love to know how much you think this dress cost me, let me know your guess in the comments, I can’t wait to read!!

ps: I’d be posting my photos on my Instagram, so be sure to be following me there.
